Defining Principles of Design

Symmetry
balanced proportions and correspondence in size, shape, and relative position of parts on opposite sides of a dividing line or median plane or about a center or axis

Asymmetrical Balance
proportions are not even on two sides, but they are still balanced

Radial Balance
balance of objects around a fixed axis in a circular form

Scale
The size of an object

Proportion
the size of an object in regard to another object

Emphasis
object that draws attention to itself by being different, often works with contrast

Contrast
difference in appearance next to another object; juxtaposition

Variety
the quality or state of having different forms or types

Repetition
repeating of an object or element

Rhythm
continuation of elements with a similar pattern
